DEBATE & MUN (MODEL UNITED NATIONS )

Debate class offers students a platform to master the delivery of rational, coherent arguments. It enables them to create a compelling narrative by utilizing rhetorical eloquence; instills a great sense of poise and self-confidence and teaches the skills of researching, organizing, and presenting information in a persuasive format.

MUN (Model United Nations) will introduce students to economics, politics, business, international trade, world history, law, sociology, military history, ethics and logic. During the two hours of each class, one hour will be used to teach, and the other hour will allow students to apply the knowledge they have just learned to practice and discuss the conference in Model United Nations. At the end of the entire course, students will have a broader understanding of what forces shape the world in the past, present and future.

Level 01

This level is for students that are new to debating. Students need to learn the fundamentals necessary to compete at tournaments and progress to our other levels. If a student takes this level, we should expect them to be able to offer 2-3 minute speeches comfortably and have a basic understanding of the fundamentals by the end of a 16 class term.Students from this class will be given information on upcoming tournaments, but this information should be limited to junior tournaments and tournaments designed for newcomers.

Level 02

This level is for students that have some exposure to debating but are still mastering the fundamentals. Students need to learn the fundamentals necessary to compete at tournaments, grow their confidence and practice debating regularly to progress to our other levels. Students will begin to learn the content necessary for becoming a good debater while still honing fundamentals. If a student takes this level, we should expect them to be able to offer at a minimum 4-minute speeches regularly and comfortably and have a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals by the end of a 32 class period, or 2 terms overall. As is the case for all classes after level 1, students may be advanced early on a case by case basis.

Students from this class will be given information on upcoming tournaments and opportunities to debate on a regular basis.

Level 03

In this course students will be introduced to the world of writing stories, understanding stylistic devices and reading a classic work of fiction to help them better understand what makes a good story. The students will be brought through the parts of the story and learn how to write stories that include the stylistic devices that make a good story. They will also learn the grammatical rules that are imperative to good storytelling. Students will learn how to edit their own work and be exposed to a variety of story styles from flash fiction to fables. Students will be asked to complete in class writing assignments and share their writing.

Level 04

This level is for students that have a strong grasp of argumentation, debate formats and style that are looking to perfect their debating and will be preparing for tournaments. Students need to learn the fundamentals necessary to compete at tournaments, grow their confidence and practice debating regularly to progress to our other levels. Students will begin to focus more on strong content creation, advanced strategy, current events and will continue practicing on a regular basis with more difficult motion topics.

To advance from this level, students will be expected to speak for 5 minutes without issue, have debate tournament experience and give compelling speeches on a regular basis.

Advancements will happen on a case by case basis, but at a baseline, students should not expect to advance from level 4 after only one semester.

Students from this class will be given information on upcoming tournaments and opportunities to debate on a regular basis. Class content may change depending on the students and other factors.

Level 04 Adv

This level is for students that have an excellent grasp of argumentation, debate formats and style that are looking to master their debating and will be preparing for tournaments. Students need to learn the fundamentals necessary to compete at tournaments, grow their confidence and practice debating regularly to progress to our other levels. Students will begin to focus more on content, news and additional advanced strategy, and will continue practicing on a regular basis with more difficult subjects and motions. To advance from this level, students will be expected to speak for 5 minutes effortlessly, have considerable debate tournament experience, Awards from tournaments or excellent previous class participation and will have to give excellent speeches on a regular basis. Advancements will happen on a case-by-case basis, but as a baseline, students should not expect to advance from level 4Adv after only one semester.

Students from this class will be given information on upcoming tournaments and opportunities to debate on a regular basis. Class content may change depending on the students and other factors.

Level 05

This level is for students that have a superior grasp of argumentation, debate formats and style that are looking to perfect their debating, compete against excellent students and prepare for tournaments. Students need to master the fundamentals necessary to compete at tournaments, hone their confidence and practice debating regularly to succeed at this level. Students will begin to focus more on content, news and additional advanced strategy, and will continue practicing on a regular basis with more difficult subjects and motions.

Students from this class will be given information on upcoming tournaments and opportunities to debate on a regular basis. Class content may change depending on the students and other factors.
